PEW research is an American think-tank they have published a good survey, the survey’s name is religion in India: tolerance and segregation in it, they have shown how different religious think in India. They look around 30000 people from India, from different states, and of different religions.
They divided the 30000 people the way religions are divided among India and they held in-person interviews between November 2019 to March 2020 and ask them around 70-80 questions. And then created insights from those answers. There may be 3 reactions in your mind when I will tell you the findings. At first- I already knew it, second, that’s new information, or last- that’s weird, not believable. So, write down your reactions below in the comment box. I will tell you the findings one by one. I have extracted a total of 8 parameters from which I will tell you the findings, which are written in its summary.
1. Religious Freedom
The first thing, which is going on for a long time in India
that religious freedom is over and people don’t respect each other. They found
a completely different finding under they said that 1. The majority of people have full religious freedom. 2. Their core value is to respect other religions
but also know that their religion is different from other religions they know
this too and respect others religions too. Across different religions, people
want to stop inter-religion marriage. Also, a small percentage of people
don’t like it if their neighbor is of a different religion.
2. Hindu Nationalism
The second thing is, so much is written about Hindu nationalism
that, ‘they want to color everyone in the same color, they don’t like
diversity’ they have got findings of it. They said that being Hindu and
speaking Hindi, most of the people see it after trying it with nationalism and
the majority of these people become the core vote bank for BJP. But in this
thing that how nationalistic, you are if you are Hindu or speak Hindi, there is
so much divide if you see it across the region/state. Along with this, a big finding in that survey is that the people who link Hindu/Hindi with nationalism call diversity, a positive thing.
3. Indian Muslims
The third is on Indian Muslims. They tell that Indian Muslims
are very proud of the Indian culture and they told the Indian Muslims think
that Indian culture is supreme. Also, many Muslims said that they have to face
discrimination, and also many Muslims are happy in their own court but they
don’t support triple talk (divorce).
4. Caste Discrimination
The next point is about caste discrimination. They said that
majority of the people in India are either SC/ST or OBC and there are a lesser
number of general category people. There is another interesting point, southern
and east Indians are told that they face caste discrimination more but there is
more news about caste discrimination about east Indians. But this can also be a
reason that we only read the news about the north, and our news portal doesn’t
cover news about southern or east India.
5. Religious Conversion
The next point is about religious conversion. They said that
despite the conversion, the overall population of either Hindus or others doesn’t seem to be changing. They also said that Hindus gain the same number of
people through reconversion as they lose through conversion. Also, more people in southern India have left Hinduism and came to Christianity.
6. Being Religious
The next point is how important is it to be religious? And the majority of the people in India think that being religious is very important.
You can see in every religion that birthdays, marriage or death, all are in a
religious way and people also believe in that only.
7. Manifestation of GOD
Along with that many Hindus believe that there are many
manifestations of GOD. An interesting point in this is, many people in
monotheistic religious people also do believe in the different manifestations of
GOD. Also, people of different religions celebrate different festivals but,
people celebrating different religion’s festivals are lesser. But the main festivals
in India are Diwali, Eid, and Christmas
8. Religious Identity
The next and last point is how conscious people are to
preserve their religious identity. They tell that beef-eating people in Hinduism
or people who celebrate different religion’s festivals similarly, pork eating
people in Islam and people who celebrate different religion’s festivals are not
considered good religious people. People think that they are going away from
their religious identity. They also wrote that Indian Muslim's beliefs often
match with Indian Hindus, and much lesser with south Asian Muslims this was
also an interesting piece of information.
which you agree or which shocked you, or with which you disbelieve, you can tell whatever you think.
